I have just finished filling in my tax return. My brain hurts. I've never had to do one before (I've got to do one this year because of all the freelance writing stuff, and because I'm far too honest, which is a once-a-Catholic thing, I guess). The freelance bit was easier than I thought it'd be because my accounts are hardly extensive, but all the shares-and-interest bit just went way over my head. I ended up phoning Simon to ask him something that I thought was fiendishly complicated, but which was actually very straightforward - or so he maintained. How come you don't know all this stuff? he asked. I went all childish and asked him if he knew what iambic pentameter was. Iambic pentameter's not really a lifeskill, though, is it? he replied. Grrr.

Wall's Ice-cream

Yay, you deserve a medal. Or an ice cream. You choose.

I've got to do mine soon, although it's a nice short one compared to last years one

I think I'll have the ice cream! Especially if it's chocolate ...

I swear they were devised by soemone extremely fiendish.

Self Assessment - aaaagh!! I did some contract work a few years ago and have been filling-in those blasted forms ever since. They make no sense whatsoever.

It's the thought of doing one every single year for ever and ever that freaks me out ...

Oh, for goodness' sake, you bunch of crybabies, it's really simple, unless you lose your P60, like I do every year, and finish it on the 30th December, online, like I do, with about 6 mins to spare, having lost your password and access codes every other week since October.

I hate it!

This is why I'm doing it in July (having turned the whole house upside-down yesterday, in panic mode, because I couldn't find the form that I'd put away in a Safe Place because I knew I'd lose it).

Grrr ...

Are you in tonight? You'd better be, 'cause otherwise I won't get to talk to you for the next fortnight, and that won't do at all.

But you don't have to do one every year, I'm sure of it. You can ring them and tell them you don't think you need one, and they stop sending. They find out in other ways if you have unpaid tax anyway - I'm pretty sure they know it all already and just want to see the extent of your lies/truths.

I think they can see inside my brain.

I did the "stop sending me them A7832" form and got a "we'll stop sending you them G6465" form but they still keep sending them, then when I don't fill it in I get a £100 fine then I have to copy the form that says I don't have to do them, they send me a letter saying they won't fine me, then they do the same thing next year. It's like Elton John song...

We just did ours last night, too. (Well, last night on our side of the planet, that is) We had an extension, but The Boy needed figures for student loans, etc., so...

I hate taxes. The fact that they're technically illegal and were only instituted as a "temporary measure" years back by the US Govt only makes things worse.

Blech! Definitely time for some ice cream.

Taxes are vile. It's all so complicated, and not what I do (I'm wimpish about numbers). Ice cream, definitely ...
